A brand lives on two axes: control (low to high) and flexibility (low to high). Where it sits between them decides whether it stays coherent or drifts.
The four quadrants
- High control, low flexibility: a rigid system.
- Low control, high flexibility: chaos.
- High control, high flexibility: a mature, living system.
- Low control, low flexibility: no system at all.
Most organizations assume the goal is maximum control. But total control with no flexibility produces a brand that can't adapt; total flexibility with no control produces a brand no one recognizes.
The challenge is balancing the two, not choosing one.
The aim isn't to remove the differences across teams and contexts. It's to manage those differences within a clear system.
